Upcoming Causes

This October, Blackmore Vale Rotary will be marking World End Polio Day with a series of events across Wincanton to raise awareness and support the global effort to eradicate polio.

Our programme includes An Evening with Dr. Mark Townsend – End Polio in Action, where Dr. Townsend will share his recent frontline experience immunising children in Pakistan as part of Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

We will also be visiting local primary schools to deliver engaging assemblies about the history of polio, the success of vaccination worldwide, and why protecting children remains vital today.

Throughout the month, we aim to host an awareness stand in the town centre, offering information, answering questions, planting and selling purple crocuses to raise funds for Rotary’s life‑saving work. Every crocus sold helps ensure that children everywhere can grow up free from the threat of polio.

This February, as part of Rotary’s global Peace and Conflict Resolution Month, Blackmore Vale Rotary is launching a community project to raise funds for a Peace Pole to be installed in Wincanton. Peace Poles are an internationally recognised symbol of the message May Peace Prevail On Earth, first created in Japan over fifty years ago and now standing in towns and cities across every continent. Each Peace Pole carries this message in up to three languages, reflecting the diversity and unity of the local community it represents. Our aim is to create a Peace Pole that speaks directly to Wincanton—celebrating our shared hope for peace and our commitment to building a kinder, more understanding world. If you would like to get involved or support the fundraising, we would be delighted to hear from you.

This Spring, Blackmore Vale Rotary will once again host the Annual Volunteer Fair in partnership with the Balsam Centre. The event brings together volunteer‑led organisations from across the Wincanton area who are looking for people willing to give their time, skills, and enthusiasm to support local causes. It’s a chance for members of the community to explore meaningful opportunities, meet charities and groups doing vital work, and discover how they can make a difference to others in need. Whether you’re looking to volunteer regularly or simply want to learn more about what’s happening in your town, the Volunteer Fair offers a welcoming space to get involved and support the heart of Wincanton’s community.
